President John Dramani Mahama on Friday relieved the deputy minister of communication, Victoria Hammah, of her position a day after she was heard in a leaked tape to radio stations saying she would not quit politics until she has made at $1 million.
A statement signed by the Minister of Information and Media relations, Mahama Ayariga did not, however, give any reason for Miss Hammah’s dismissal.
In the leaked tape Ms Hammah is heard complaining to a female voice that the deputy minister of gender, children and social protection, Rachel Appoh, was instigating bad press against the substantive minister of the gender ministry, Nana Oye Lithur, whom she described as "an institution".
Miss Hammah says Miss Appoh was risking her appointment as a deputy minister even though, “she cannot boast of 100,000 Ghana cedis or 100,000 dollars” in her personal account. She then makes the damning statement: “I will not quit politics until I make one million dollars. If you have money then you can control people”.
She also said, on the tape, that, “it was useless for the deputy minister to fight Nana Lithur whose husband is friends with former President Jerry Rawlings and was President Mahama’s lawyer during the 2012 election challenge.”
“It is even being said that Nana Lithur met some of the judges on the panel on behalf of the President during the hearing of the petition and you cannot exactly tell what role she played, so it is fruitless to fight such a person,” she added.
