Wednesday 8th of April..
Jaji adjusted the helmet firmly on the round of his head, hid a small mischievous smile as he sped past a uniformed policeman who was flagging him to halt. "Rubbish," he said under his breathe,"when I neva work one Naira since morning,na im one yeye policeman wan take my moni do independence day!" He deftly manoeuvred his Okada back to the road, and threw a devilish grin at the now fuming policeman.
It was a very hot day in April. Intense perspiration trickled down Jaji's skin. Days as this one actually made you wonder if the angry sun would fall from the sky. Jaji's stomach began to make some growling sound. He instantly recognised the voice of hunger. But quickly he brushed it aside with a shrug of shoulders. He had no money on him,not even a dime. No passenger had graced the seat behind all morning and it was starting to become a trifle disturbing.
Fortunately,a few moments later a plump,'yellow' woman halted him. Jaji heaved a sigh of relief. Now he couldn't hide the broad smile that lit his rather weather-beaten face. He asked where she was heading to and she answered,"Rail street." She was frowning slightly. Perhaps she was wondering at the cause of his blatant smile.
"Hundred naira,"Jaji chipped in,lowering his Okada to accommodate her and same time taking in her rather voluptuous backside.
"For wetin?!" she hissed,"Rail street na seventy Naira. If you no go,you kuku rest." she folded her arms around her bosom awaiting his response. Jaji was thinking fast now. This could provide him a wrap of fufu(without meat though) and a sachet of cold water! He gestured at her to hop in behind which she did. When he was sure she was positioned properly he zoomed off.
Jaji whistled merrily as he rode. The day suddenly seemed promising. His mind drifted to his irate Landlady who had picked up a fight with him earlier on. Now he couldn't even recall how it had all begun. Mama Kotun was just a troublesome woman. If she weren't picking up a fight against a tenant, she was instigating another.
Jaji's mind rudely drifted back to the present when he began to feel soft, huge mounds of flesh press against his back. He blinked his eyes. Maybe he was imagining things. Maybe the hunger was much worse than he's thought. He blinked his eyes. But no,it was real, for the 'yellow' aunty behind was doing it just again!
